  • School Rules

The Corbet School has an excellent reputation for good behaviour. The OFSTED report (JUNE 2004) said that pupils “behaviour is very good. They enjoy very good relationships with each other as well as with the adults around. Pupils’ attitudes to learning, their attendance and punctuality are all very good.” The “Outstanding” OFSTED report (April 2008) confirmed this reputation - “pupils feel very safe in school because of the excellent pastoral support. Pupils say that incidents of bullying are rare and are dealt with very well… they like the clear guidelines for behaviour so that they know exactly what is expected. Incidents of poor behaviour are almost non-existent and behaviour around the school and in lessons is of the highest standard”.

We also believe that firm but fair discipline is part of our responsibility towards you and your son/daughter. It is very important too for pupils to know that parents and the school are co-operating in this matter. If, on rare occasions, you felt your son or daughter is being bullied we urge you to make contact with the school - form tutor or relevant Learning Managers or Assistant Head in the first instance.

    School Rules

The School Council prepared in January 1999 a Code of Conduct which has been revised by Corbet pupils in April 2010 and has been adopted by staff and governors. We also operate these simple rules that all pupils must follow:-

Smoking or smoking equipment is not allowed in school or on the journey to and from school. Anyone found contravening this rule is likely to be temporarily excluded. Similarly the possession of other harmful substances (especially when supplying these to or sharing them with other pupils) will lead initially to a temporary fixed-term exclusion pending further investigations. Further investigations may necessitate permanent exclusion.

Knives or other offensive weapons are not allowed.

From a safety point of view, no-one is allowed to go out of school without the permission of a member of staff and without signing out in the School Office.

Please remember that every absence must be explained. (Please see page 15 for further information about absences). Whilst we appreciate notification by phone on the first day of absence we would also ask that all absences be covered by a brief note, email or fax giving the date of absence and a reason. This note should be bought to school on the first day back following an absence.

It is not advisable to bring valuable items into school. We cannot be held responsible for any losses, however they may occur. Large sums of money should not be brought into school unless it is to be paid to the School Office. The use of mobile phones during school is not allowed.

The Corbet School has a uniform policy which is explained in greater detail later in this handbook. Uniform contributes to the team spirit within the school and assists with our approach to behaviour. It is, therefore, very important that our rules are followed.

It may be necessary to add other rules during the year and these will be communicated to pupils through assemblies and to parents via school newsletters.

  • Transport Behaviour

    School Transport code of behavior

    Before the journey pupils must:

    • make sure they have their bus pass.

    • be at the correct pick up point in good time.

    • wait in an orderly manner. Be aware of other pedestrians and members of the public in the ‘pick up’ area (noise, litter, crowding the footpath).

    • be aware of traffic (keep on the footpath).

    • board the bus in an orderly fashion DO NOT PUSH.

    • go to the seats immediately and sit down correctly (fasten seat belts).

    During the journey pupils must:

    • stay properly seated at all times: do not stand up whilst the vehicle is moving (keep seat belts fastened until time to get off).

    • do not distract the driver in any way.

    • never smoke.

    • Never throw items around the bus.

    • never attempt to misuse doors, windows or emergency exits.

    • not damage the vehicle in any way.

    • report any concerns to the driver or school.

At the end of the journey pupils must:

    • remain seated until the vehicle stops.

    • get off the bus in an orderly manner.

    • make sure all items of bags / clothing etc. are carried off the bus safely.

    • be aware of traffic as you get off the bus.

    • NEVER cross in front of or behind the school bus or a car.

    • make their way home in a sensible manner being aware that they are still in school uniform and of other members of the public.

Misbehaviour on the bus could lead to permanent exclusion from travelling.

  • Homework

The school would like to work very closely with Parents to ensure that pupils undertake Homework.

Homework is considered to make an important contribution to pupils' progress and success. Not only does it provide extra time for covering the work laid down, but it helps pupils to take initiative, become independent in their learning and to develop a work routine. Parents receive a homework timetable each year and are asked to keep a regular check on their child's planner, where homework is recorded.
It is very important that you ensure your son/daughter does their homework on time. We would strongly advise you to monitor this important aspect of their school career. We would also like your support when your son/daughter is asked to meet deadlines for projects and coursework. Pupils must know how serious it is to be late producing work.

  • The Corbet Friends Association

The CFA supports school by organising events and activities for pupils, their families and friends throughout the year. CFA events are an excellent way to bring together the whole school community, raise funds to help provide ‘extras’ for pupils, and an opportunity for everyone to work together towards a common goal.

In 2011 we held various fundraising events, including Easter and Christmas Bingo evenings, a Bags 2 School collection, and a Year 7 and 8 disco, together raising over £1’700.

We have been able to help with transport costs for a trip to the Pioneer Centre for the whole of Year 7 and support BBC School News Report, by donating £200.00 to the English Department.  In June 2011 we contributed £100.00 towards the cost of the disco for the Year 11 Prom and in November we were able to purchase a new lectern for school.

This coming year we hope to raise enough money to provide a whole year group with new lockers and to lease a minibus for school use.

At a time when all schools will be affected by funding cuts, our school and children will benefit from the additional funds we can raise, the work of the CFA will be more important than ever!

All parents can get involved even if they only have a small amount of time to offer, we look forward to welcoming new members and ideas.
