School Prospectus

How do we promote responsible behaviour?

The Corbet School has an excellent reputation for good behaviour. The OFSTED report (JUNE 2004) says that pupils “behaviour is very good. They enjoy very good relationships with each other as well as with the adults around. Pupils’ attitudes to learning, their attendance and punctuality are all very good.” The inspectors felt that this is a school culture that is based on consideration for others and there is a great emphasis on partnership within the school. In this way pupils learn to work with both the staff and each other and develop the social skills that will be essential in later life. The size of the school positively benefits this approach and most, if not all staff, will know each pupil personally.

We also believe that firm but fair discipline is part of our responsibility towards you and your son/daughter. It is very important too for pupils to know that parents and the school are co-operating in this matter. If, on rare occasions, you felt your son or daughter is being bullied we urge you to make contact with the school - form tutor or relevant Assistant Head in the first instance.

School Rules

The School Council prepared in January 1999 a Code of Conduct which was adopted by staff and governors. We also operate these simple rules that all pupils must follow:-

Smoking or smoking equipment is not allowed in school or on the journey to and from school. Anyone found contravening this rule is likely to be temporarily excluded. Similarly the possession of other harmful substances (especially when supplying these to or sharing them with other pupils) will lead initially to a temporary fixed-term exclusion pending further investigations. Further investigations may necessitate permanent exclusion.

Knives or other offensive weapons are not allowed.

From a safety point of view, no-one is allowed to go out of school without the permission of a member of staff and without signing out in the School Office.

Please remember that every absence must be explained. (Read further information about absences). Whilst we appreciate notification by phone on the first day of absence we would also ask that all absences be covered by a brief note or fax giving the date(s) of absence and a reason. This note should be bought to school on the first day back following an absence.

It is not advisable to bring valuable items into school. We cannot be held responsible for any losses, however they may occur. Large sums of money should not be brought into school unless it is to be paid to the School Office. The use of mobile phones during school is not allowed.

The Corbet School has a uniform policy which is explained in greater detail later in this prospectus. Uniform contributes to the team spirit within the school and assists with our approach to behaviour. It is, therefore, very important that our rules are followed.

It may be necessary to add other rules during the year and these will be communicated to pupils through assemblies and to parents via school newsletters.

Rewards and Sanctions

The School operates a structured system of rewards and sanctions. Pupils are awarded certificates for a range of achievements e.g. outstanding effort, progress, attendance.

Any teacher may give a detention to take place after school for not more than one hour. Parents will receive formal notification of this. Although the law only expects 24 hours notice we operate a minimum of 48 hours warning to give parents the chance to make arrangements for collecting their children afterwards. Acknowledgement of this is requested but the detention is not dependent upon parental consent. Only in exceptional circumstances can the date of the detention be altered following consultation with the relevant Learning Manager, Assistant Head, the Deputy Head or Headteacher.

Grave disciplinary problems may result in exclusion by the Head. Our disciplinary arrangements are in accordance with the Education Act 1997. If you have any questions relating to behaviour, uniform or our disciplinary procedures, please contact the school.
