  • Admissions

From September 2010 all admissions to schools in England will be co-ordinated by Local Authorities (LA).  All applicants living within the Shropshire Local Authority boundary must either apply on line www.shropshire.gov.uk/schooladmissions or complete the appropriate Shropshire Council application form available from the Admissions Team 01743 254459.  Applicants living in another English Local Authority area must use the application form from their home authority or their home authority's online facility.  The Corbet School governors have agreed to operate a co-ordinated scheme with Shropshire Council and our admnissions policy is the same as all other North and South Shropshire schools.  The Corbet has a published admissions figure of 135 pupils per year group.

The Admissions Team will inform the Corbet of any requests for places within the school and the Corbets Admissions Committee will consider the applications in accordance to the schools published policy. This decision will then be passed on to the Admissions Team.

    Oversubscription Criteria

All rural secondary schools in the North and South Shropshire area all have a "catchment area".  Priority will be given to children who live within the defined area.  If you want more details of the catchment area for The Corbet School, please ring the Admissions Advisors on Shrewsbury 01743 254331, or access "Shropmap" on the Shropshire Council's website www.shropshire.gov.uk  Please note that the definitive catchment are those offered by the Admission Team in the event of any disputes.

Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs which names a particular school will be allocated places.  After which places are allocated according to an agreed set of criteria, in strict order of priority.

Priority 1: Looked After Children - Children in public care.

Priority 2: Children living within the defined Catchment Area - children living inside the catchment area will have second priority.  If there are not enough places for all children living in the catchment area, we will look at the following criteria:

    • Priority will be given to children living within the catchment area who will have an older sibling at the school on the day they are due to start.
    • After that, priority will be given to those who live inside the catchement area.

Priority 3: Children living outside the defined catchment area - after that any places left will be offered to children who live outside the catchment area.  if there are not enough places, we will look at the following criteria:

    • Priority will be given to children outside the catchment area who will have an older sibling at the school on the day they are due to start.
    • Pupils outside the catchment area without an older sibling, but who have attended a maintained Primary School that lies within the Corbets catchment area for more than a whole academic year immediatley prior to transfer.

    • After that, priority will be given to any other children who live outside the catchment area.

If, any of the above priority groups, there are more applicants than places available, priority will be given on the basis of distance from home to the nearest appropriate entrance gate of the school measured as a straight line on a computerised mapping system.  The shortest distance being given priority.  Where two addresses are within the same block of flats, the lowest number of flat or nearest the ground will be deemed to be the nearest in distance.

Where two or more applicants are considered to be equal priority after all the criteria have been taken into account, a tie breaker will be used. This will be a random allocation and overseen by an independant party not connected with the admissions process.

    Please note:

We define living in the catchment area as follows:

A child will be treated as living in the catchment area if he/she resides with his parent or carer at his/her normal and genuine place of residence for the majority of the time and that address is within the designated catchment area for the school.

We define a sibling connection as folllows:

A sibling connectionis defined as a brother or sister, step-brother or step-sisiter, half-brother or half-sister of complusory school age, living at the same address as part of the family unit.  Adopted siblings are also included.  However, cousins or other relatives who take up residence in a home in order to establish an "in catchment area" address will not be included under the sibling criterion.  Siblings must be attending the Corbet on the day that the younger sibling is due to start.

Notice to Parents - Admissions 2013-14

  • Pupil Absence

    Absence - the law

    1. Authorised Absence is absence for illness, unavoidable medical appointments, family crises relating to the child, external examinations and other exceptional circumstances.

    2. Unauthorised Absence is absence which remains unexplained by parents/guardians, taking time away from school for non-urgent, avoidable activities (whether or not explained) and truancy.

The decision as to whether an absence is authorised or not rests with the school.

If your child is absent, due to illness, please notify the school by telephone as soon as possible, on the first day of absence.

  • Concerns and Complaints

If matters of concern or complaint arise, contact should be, in the first instance, with the appropriate Tutor, Learning Manager or Assistant Head. Consultations may then be arranged, if necessary, within school with teaching staff, the Deputy Head and the Head.

On the rare occasion when discussions at this level do not resolve the matter, an approach to the Governing Body Complaints Committee may be made via the Clerk to the Governors, c/o The School Office.

  • Helping your child

Your child's progress in school will be monitored carefully by the tutor and the appropriate Learning Manager and you will receive a Report to Parents once a year. Pupils are encouraged to evaluate their own progress in all their school activities and take an active part in the compilation of their Report. On all reports, overall Effort will be indicated in one of five categories, Consistently Excellent Effort, At Times Working beyond Expectations, Working as Expected, Some Minor Concerns, Definite Cause for Concern.
Attainment will be indicated by a grade on a scale A to G (or as a National Curriculum Level).

We hope that parents will also take full advantage of opportunities to be involved with this process. Whilst children are at the Corbet School, parents will have at least yearly formal opportunities to meet their teachers but are, of course, most welcome to make appointments to meet with them at other times as is felt necessary.
Parents can help their children successfully complete their homework by providing a suitable environment in which it can be tackled and by looking at finished assignments - a signature in the Student Planner when this is achieved would emphasise the partnership between home and school.

The Student Planner is meant to act as a two-way communication between home and school so please feel free to use it.

  • Holiday Request Form

    Holidays In Term Time

STOP - PAUSE - THINK  - about the effect leave of absence in term time has on your child - Every school day counts.

    • Any term-time absence claerly has an impact an any chils'd education which can be critical in some year groups and especially at certain times of the year.
    • Holidays in ter time are not a right and will not normally be granted.  Holiday prices and the fact that parents have booked a holiday before checking with school, are not special reasons.

    • Holidays/Absences in term time are extremely disruptive for both pupils and teaching staff and are actively discouraged by the school and the Local Authority.

    • It remains a discretionary power of the school to authorise leave of absence.

    • Leave will only be granted where proper procedures have been folowed and the permission given by an authorised person within school.

    • Leave of absence will not be granted retrospectively.

    Procedure

    • Parents are to fill in the request for Leave of Absence Form (attached below), stating clearly the exceptional circumstance(s) to be taken into consideration.
    • Return the form to the Attendance Officer at the school office.

    • Parents will be informed of the decision via the reply slip.

    • If the absence is not to be authorised the Education Welfare Officer will recieve a copy this communication.

    • The Education Welfare Service will take further action, including the possibility of imposing fines on any parents taking their children away on unauthorised leave.

    • If a child stays away from school for longer than the authorised period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and could be quoted for prosecution.
