An ongoing programme of investment means that The Corbet School offers some of the best specialist facilities for teaching technology and modern languages in the county.

Through our specialist status we support the delivery of language teaching in our feeder primary schools and work closely with other secondary schools and the community.

We are always seeking to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning so that the school can deliver the high quality education which underpins all we do.

  • Curriculum & Learning

During the first three years (Key Stage 3) at The Corbet School all students follow a curriculum designed to give them a broad and balanced experience that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum as well as equipping them with a strong foundation for future study.

In the final year of Key Stage 3 (year 9) we support students and their parents in making choices from a range of courses including GCSEs, BTECs and Diploma courses available to study at Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11). All students at Key Stage 4 study English, mathematics, science, information and communication technology and religious education. In addition, to reflect our specialist status, students also follow a language course together with a choice from a range of technology options.

Throughout both key stages the progress of all students is monitored very closely. The performance of every student, including those who have special educational needs or who are gifted, is tracked against individual expectations. Those expectations are high and are based on individuals working to their full potential.

The curriculum at The Corbet School is further enhanced by our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education and Citizenship programme throughout years 7 to 11. A host of extra-curricular clubs, trips and other activities enrich students’ experience beyond the classroom and help to develop their self esteem and confidence.

  • Home School Links

The Corbet School believes that building a good relationship between home and school is essential in helping each child to access their full potential.

We encourage communications of any kind from parents throughout their child’s time at the school. This can be via phone, e-mail, and letter or in person through a pre-arranged meeting. Whatever form of contact you prefer we always respond rapidly to parental concerns. We keep parents informed by letters, newsletters, e-mails, a personal phone call or the school’s text messaging service.

Good communication is paramount not only to academic success but also to the wellbeing of all our students. Developing good communication between tutors, pupils and parents enables us to support your child in achieving their maximum potential and assist them throughout their development and education.

  • Safeguarding Pupils

The Corbet School has a robust system of policies and procedures that ensure the safeguarding and welfare of our pupils and we employ safer recruitment procedures and are accredited to the Safer School Initiative.

We have an efficient and effective route for pupils, staff and parents to communicate concerns or complaints. Senior staff are trained to a high level to deal with safeguarding issues and we have a dedicated school counsellor who works in collaboration with other support services including CHAT, School Nurse, Multi Agency Teams and looked After Children’s Services.

Our priority is to keep pupils safe so that they can thrive in a safe and happy environment.

In Key Stage 4 pupils are taught in groups according to ability in Mathematics, English, French and Science. Most other subjects are taught in mixed-ability groups.

    Options

Wherever a choice of subjects is allowed, pupils will be given the opportunity to discuss their decision with relevant teachers, and to consult with their parents. The staff will give careful consideration to the wishes of pupils and parents, but should a problem arise the final decision must rest with the School. Our planned procedures mean this rarely happens.

  • Exam Results

    Exam Results Summer 2011

85% of our pupils achieved at least 5A*-C at GCSE.

73% of our pupils achieved at least 5A*-C at GCSE (including Maths and English).

These are excellent results reflecting the hard working pupils, excellent teachers and committed parents and carers that typify this school.

  • Security

All staff will wear identity badges to indicate that they are authorised personnel.  Visitors are issued with a temporary badge which is returned to Reception on departure.  All staff and pupils are encouraged to report anyone who is on the school premises and not clearly displaying a school badge.

We also have an extensive range of CCTV equipment to record activity in key areas of the school grounds and buildings.  The recordings can be retrieved to evidence security incidents, as well as for monitoring general behaviour and reviewing Health & Safety matters.  The system provides essential support to our "Safer Schools" initiative, conducted in association with West Mercia Police and Shropshire County Council.

  • Pupil Support

Pupils belong to a tutor group of approximately 28 pupils in the same year.  They are looked after by a teacher acting as their tutor.  When grouping children we consider their need for helpful friendships as well as their educational needs.  The tutor is the key person in the life of a pupil providing counseling, guidance, discipline, communication and administration for the group.  Pupils usually remain with the same tutor throughout the whole of their Corbet career.  This enhances the support that the tutor can give your child.  Parents with any kind of queries should make first contact with the tutor.

Tutor groups enjoy many activities together like involvement in charity interests, and participation in sporting or other whole school events.

Tutors are always keen to keep in close touch with you and you are invited to contact by an entry in the Student Planner, a note or telephone call over any worries you may have.  Staff will do their best to make an initial response on the same day.

In September 2010 thuja school revised its management structure, which in turn changed the setup of the pastoral structure.  The tutors in each Key Stage are guided in the first instance by Every Child Matters Managers (ECMM's) who in Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) is Mr Mauro Hartshorn, and in Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) is Miss Gill Bamford.  As well as the ECMM's there is an overall leader, which is one of the school's Assistant Heads; Mrs Alison Millward.

The school is arranged in five Houses - Cedar, Oak, Redwood, Beech and Elm.  Pupils support their House by gaining "Positive Tutor Information Slips (T+)" in Years 7 & 8 for good attitude and effort and by participating in House Sport, quizzes and competitions.  In Years 9, 10 & 11 pupils are awarded Achievement Rewards, which are issued to pupils for such things as effort with particular pieces of work, contribution to class discussions, homework, improved standards of work etc.

  • Corbet Friends Association (CFA)

The CFA supports school by organising events and activities for pupils, their families and friends throughout the year. CFA events are an excellent way to bring together the whole school community, raise funds to help provide ‘extras’ for pupils, and an opportunity for everyone to work together towards a common goal.

In 2011 we held various fundraising events, including Easter and Christmas Bingo evenings, a Bags 2 School collection, and a Year 7 and 8 disco, together raising over £1’700.

We have been able to help with transport costs for a trip to the Pioneer Centre for the whole of Year 7 and support BBC School News Report, by donating £200.00 to the English Department.  In June 2011 we contributed £100.00 towards the cost of the disco for the Year 11 Prom and in November we were able to purchase a new lectern for school.

This coming year we hope to raise enough money to provide a whole year group with new lockers and to lease a minibus for school use.

At a time when all schools will be affected by funding cuts, our school and children will benefit from the additional funds we can raise, the work of the CFA will be more important than ever!

All parents can get involved even if they only have a small amount of time to offer, we look forward to welcoming new members and ideas.
